National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims
Thursday, 24 September 2009
Friday, September 25th is the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. It is a day to remember and honor victims of murder and acknowledge the impact of violent crime on their surviving loved ones.

If you have a loved one who was violently taken out of your life by murder, we are so sorry for your loss. Your loved ones are not forgotten and the Counseling Center for Trauma and Grief has organized an online virtual candlelight vigil in order to honor their lives.

Please visit https://www.cctgnj.org/DAY_OF_REMEMBRANCE.html in order to view the candles that were "lit" to honor those lost to murder.

Dying in Vein (Ohio)
Thursday, 24 September 2009
Is subjecting an inmate to a failed execution cruel and unusual punishment?
By Krista Gesaman | Newsweek Web Exclusive

Can a vein save a convicted killer? In the case of Romell Broom—it might. Broom was sentenced to death for raping and murdering 14-year-old Tryna Middleton on Sept. 21, 1984. Broom isn't supposed to be alive to witness the 25th anniversary of Middleton's death—but he is. Last Tuesday, the execution team at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility spent several hours trying unsuccessfully to find a viable vein for a lethal injection. The High Cost of Vengeance
Monday, 14 September 2009
John Diaz

As far as I know, I've made eye contact with only one serial killer, Darrell Keith Rich, in the summer of 1978. I was a 23-year-old reporter, notebook in hand, covering his pretrial proceedings in Shasta County. He was a 23-year-old biker, hands and legs bound in shackles, accused of a two-month rampage of kidnapping, rape and murder. He killed four of the nine females he attacked. His youngest victim, 11 years, old, was abducted, sexually assaulted and thrown off a bridge. She fell 105 feet, hit the rocks and crawled to her death.

A year earlier, the California Legislature had reinstituted the death penalty, five years after it had been invalidated by the state Supreme Court as cruel and unusual punishment. The specter of the death penalty did not deter Darrell Rich in the summer of 1978. His crimes were as horrific as those of any villain in a Dirty Harry movie: He used rocks to crush the skulls of two of his victims; he shot a mother twice in the mouth as she pleaded for her life. He glowered through the initial court appearances I covered.
