PFADP ACTION ALERT: Texas has scheduled to execute Hank Skinner on Wednesday, March 24 at 6 p.m. despite the fact that critical DNA evidence from the crime scene has never been tested. A laboratory in Arizona last week offered to test the DNA evidence for free if Texas Gov. Rick Perry grants Mr. Skinner a 30-day reprieve. Perry has so far refused. Eleven people on death row in Texas are among the 139 death row exonerees nationwide.

Thousands of people have made calls and sent emails, faxes, and letters on behalf of Hank Skinner. Please do so yourself immediately.

Reception Honoring NC House Speaker Joe Hackney, Chapel Hill

People of Faith Against the Death Penalty is sponsoring a reception honoring the Honorable Joe Hackney, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives. The event will celebrate the Speaker’s successful efforts to ensure passage of the North Carolina Racial Justice Act.

The reception will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the home of Dr. James Crow, 109 Ledge Lane, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Senators Hear Testimony on Bill to Study Death Penalty Costs (Nebraska)

The question of whether the Nebraska Legislature should embark on a study of the costs of the death penalty was addressed Wednesday in the Judiciary Committee.

During a debate on repealing the death penalty earlier this session, Omaha Sen. Brenda Council introduced an amendment to direct state Auditor Mike Foley to find and report on the costs. She argued capital punishment is the most inefficient use of tax dollars in fighting crime.

Kansas Bill to End Death Penalty Fails; Senators Praised for Debate

TOPEKA, Kan. (CNS) -- The Kansas Catholic Conference praised the state's senators for their "impassioned and thoughtful" debate on the death penalty even though they failed to pass a measure to abolish it.

The senators voted 20 to 20 on the bill Feb. 19, falling one vote short of what was required for passage.
